On Monday, February 12, 2018, Prof. Jens Nielsen gave an inspiring talk on the Systems Biology of Yeast Metabolism at the Institute of Technology in Tartu.
Prof. Nielsen is one of the leading scientists at the Novo Nordisk Foundation Centre for Biosustainability, the partner center for ECSB within the CelESTial project. He is also Director, Department of Biology and Biological Engineering, Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden.
During the meetings with the Vice Rector of Development, dr. Erik Puura, and later with the representatives of the Estonian Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications, the plans for the CelESTial center and the pilot plant for cell factories were discussed. Both meetings resulted in a positive note in support of the plan to build a pilot plant in Tartu that would serve as an industrial scale-up center for NCB and also for the regional industries.
Prof. Jens Nielsen is currently directing a research group of more than 60 people. He has published more than 600 papers that have been cited more than 47,000 times (current H-factor >100), co-authored more than 40 books and is the inventor of more than 50 patents. He was identified by Thompson Reuter as a highly cited researcher in 2015. Jens Nielsen has founded several biotech companies, including Fluxome A/S, Metabogen AB, and Biopetrolia AB, and has served on the scientific advisory board of various biotech companies in the USA and Europe.
